Maternity Fashion Do's and Don'ts for Your Photoshoot

When preparing for your maternity photoshoot, choosing the right outfit is vital to ensure you feel beautiful and confident. Here’s a helpful guide to navigate the do's and don’ts of maternity fashion for your session.

Do's:

1. Choose Draping Fabrics
   Opt for soft, flowing materials that drape elegantly over your body. Fabrics like chiffon or lace can create beautiful shapes, give your image plenty of motion and allow us to create multiple flattering silhouettes.

2. Wear Solid Colors or Subtle Patterns
   Solid colors tend to photograph well and keep the focus on your beautiful bump. If you prefer patterns, choose subtle ones that don’t distract from your figure.

3. Accessorize Thoughtfully
   Accessories can enhance your appearance. Select necklaces or hairpieces that match your outfit without being too much. Choose items that show your personal style but aren't too flashy. An elaborate necklace can distract from your face and make the photo look cluttered.

4. Select Flattering Cuts
   Many women in their third trimester struggle with body changes. A long dress is great for hiding swollen ankles while highlighting your bump comfortably. You can also wear cozy flip-flops or boots under the dress without anyone noticing.

5. Consider the season and setting of your photos
   Consider the location of your shoot when planning your wardrobe. Opt for colors and styles that will make you pop, whether you're in a serene outdoor setting or a bustling urban landscape. In autumn, hues like rust, burgundy, and forest green are ideal, while springtime calls for fresher tones. Aim to stand out rather than blend in; in urban settings, earth tones or jewel tones may be advantageous. 6. Chose a good fabric
   When selecting fabrics for your maternity photoshoot, prioritize options that flow gracefully and resist wrinkling. Ideal choices include gauze, crepe, or soft cotton, as these materials drape beautifully. Polyester also offers good flow, while rayon is known for its excellent photographic qualities. Lace adds a touch of elegance and is consistently a popular choice.

Don'ts:

1. Avoid Tight, Restrictive Clothing
   What looks good in person will not necessarily look good on camera. Steer clear of garments with elastic that digs into your skin. Remember, you’re wanting to create movement and shapes.

2. Skip Loud Prints

Most professional photographers do not provide that service, so ensure your outfit is suitable and opaque to avoid any issues during your session.

4. Don’t wear black
   Despite popular belief, black is often not the best choice for maternity shoots. While it is a naturally slimming color, it can sometimes conceal the very bump you want to showcase. The goal of your maternity photos is to highlight this beautiful stage of life, and wearing black may inadvertently hide the bump, making it difficult to capture the essence of your pregnancy.

5. Don’t forget about your undergarments. 

   What you wear underneath your outfit matters too! Make sure you have a well-fitting bra that doesn’t sag, dig into your body, or cause unnecessary lumps and bumps. Purchase undergarments in advance and with plenty of time to ensure you have a great fit. 

6. Avoid these fabrics
   Avoid heavy Cottons and linens: These fabrics wrinkle easily, which can detract from the polished look you want for your photos. In addition avoid ultra stretchy t-Shirt material: While these materials may seem comfortable, they often don't provide the structure needed for a flattering fit. They can cling to areas that you may not want to emphasize, potentially leading to unflattering images. Lastly, avoid shiny fabrics, as they can create unflattering reflections.
